Bell Sanction 2 is a full-face helmet that protects kids teeth and chin in addition to just the head. It is advertised for MTB and BMX but will work equally well for skateboarding, roller skating, general biking and riding a scooter.
We purchased this helmet as an upgrade from ABUS Youdrop FF when it became too small.
Size
The helmet feels large and a bulky overall, especially when compared to ABUS Youdrop FF (read our review) or similar with bolt-on chin guards.
Size L for a head diameter of 57cm (age 10) does fit and is not loose but I would recommend size M. There is a lot of padding inside so even my 61cm diameter head could put it on.
Weight
The size M weighs 1040 grams or roughly 1kg. Earlier Sanction 1 model was only 850 grams (almost 200g lighter) but lacked the following features:
Sanction 2 vs Sanction 1
Sanction 2 is an updated model released in the summer of 2023 with improved ventilation as the most significant change with 14 vents in total now. Kids have been riding it in 23C (73F) weather and not experiencing any overheating.
The original Sanction 1 models are lighter at 850 grams for size M.
Here is the official comparison between the two models by the manufacturer.
Sanction 2 DLX
The DLX variant features a Fidlock buckle for one-handed release, different padding material and a Mips protection system while being 40 grams heavier. It is more suitable for impacts at higher speeds.
All Sanction 2 models have ASTM Downhill and BMX certification!
Price
The retail prices for BELL Sanction 2 helmets are:
- $100 for Sanction 2
- $140 for Sanction 2 DLX
The original Sanction 1 models are now available for a discount but the improved ventilation is a significant reason to choose the newer Sanction 2 models.
